Horse treks in and around Franz Josef, West Coast, New Zealand
The following rides are our three standard treks. Please email us regarding these horse treks, or for suggestions of which trek may suit you best.
Docherty Creek Horse Trek - 1 hour
Child: NZ$60 (12 years and under)
A trek suitable for those who are pressed for time but still wish to enjoy glacier country on horseback. This ride offers a stunning vista of New Zealand's Southern Alps including views of Mount Elie de Beaumont while trekking along and across Docherty Creek.
The basics of horse riding are taught along the way if you're new to riding, while you relax and appreciate your surroundings. Learn about the history of the Franz Josef
Glacier and its retreat through our valley. If this is your first horseback experience we will make sure it is a positive one and that you come back smiling!
A great evening trek.
Two to Three Hour Horse Trek
Ride Time: 2 hours
Child: NZ$90 (12 years and under)
Ride Time: 3 hours
This one is for you if you would like to go for a canter through the fields, but also a safe trek for beginners who can ride at a more leisurely pace. Ride through private farmland down to the clearest of streams.
Take time for a photo in the water with the backdrop of the snowy peaks or New Zealand's West Coast rainforest.
Meander back to the stable along the riverbed while you learn about the glacier and our region.
Our small groups allow riders to get to know each other and give the guides an opportunity to offer riding tips along the way.
This is also a great evening trek.
Waiho to the Beach Horse Trek - 6 hours
For the experienced rider who is really missing the saddle while on holiday! This ride is to the Waiho beach and over the Omoeroa Bluff.
Have your lunch on one of New Zealand's remote West Coast Beaches, with not another soul in sight. On a clear day the vista of the Southern Alps, Mount Cook and Mount Tasman is breathtaking.
This trail takes you through the native bush, over glacial moraine. You may even be lucky enough to see some seals or bottlenose dolphins. A lot of trotting and cantering, so make sure you are staying somewhere with a spa pool! Minimum 2 riders.
